Pink Variety Store, Pell City/Riverside, AL

Located on Highway 78 in Pell City (well, Riverside), the Pink Variety Store was an odd find to say the least. We rolled up into the parking lot to the store of pink, were greeted by a hen as we walked through the  doors, and then slammed with visual imagery. This store has anything and everything!

Cahaba River, Irondale location

One of Alabama’s wonders, the Cahaba River winds its way through many of our cities throughout the state. At various points on the river, you can drop in a canoe or kayak and paddle your way down its beautiful pathway. One location is located in Irondale, AL, where you can drop in a watercraft, hike a trail, walk a path, take a picnic, or simply sit and take in the scenery.

Barber Motorsports: Sculptures

Sculptures at Barber Motorsports

Okay, we’d read that there were large ant/insect sculptures at the Barber Motorsports Museum/Track , so since we were already in Leeds, we took the opportunity to travel on over! We drove up to the huge entrance, parking lot, and museum and we see… no insects. What we did see were some incredible sculptures dedicated to the human spirit and need for speed… After taking some shots of these uber cool dudes, we walked into the museum just to check out the cost & layout of the place. $15 per adult, motorcycles everywhere, and an old coot with a chip on his shoulder for a security guard. We’ll be back for the museum and a race – the races start back up March 21-23rd!

Legend of John Henry

The Legend of John Henry

Legend has it that John Henry, slave of a railroad owner, raced against a steam engine at Oak Tunnel just outside of Leeds, AL. The same story is floating around in West Virginia as well… Research has been done to substatiate claims for both loactions, but each time one person thinks they have confirmed a story, another researcher debunks the claim.

We took a quick trip over to Leeds using coordinates found on the waymarking site and plugging them into google earth for directions. The directions led us to the right location, but found No Trespassing signs when we turned onto Tunnel Road. We decided to park anyway and take the short hike along the railroad lines to the tunnel.

Above this entry, you’ll find photographs taken here… one thing we forgot about until we were walking back down the tracks is that legend has it that the tunnel is haunted. We felt nothing freaky here, and both of us believe in the paranormal, but when we looked at some of the tunnel shots, we found the tell-tale signs of blobs of light in 2 shots. Weird, eh?
